As the weather becomes warmer, we as fitness professionals start to hear more and more stories about how asthma is affecting our clients or those close to them.  People with asthma can use exercise as a tool to not only become healthier, but to reduce asthma attacks.  New studies have shown that it is safe for those who suffer from asthma to exercise regularly.  Those who do exercise show improved ability to take in and use oxygen, which leads to improved cardiopulmonary fitness.  This can help reduce bronchial spasms and overall lead to fewer asthma attacks.
Here are a few quick tips and reminders to maximize your fitness program safely.
  • Take any medication prescribed by your physician prior to exercising.
  • Take ample time to warm up and cool down before and after your routine, at least 5-10 minutes for each.   Low level aerobic activity used in a warm up will prepare your body for higher intensities of exercise.
  • Do not rush through your cool down!  Extending it can prevent asthma attacks that occur immediately following an exercise session.
  • Breathe in through your nose and out of your mouth.  This will help you set a rhythmic breathing pattern and keep your oxygen intake high.  This will also help your respiratory muscles of your chest and back stay active and working
  • Try alternate forms of exercise such as Yoga and Tai Chi.  Both are a great way to practice correct breathing techniques.  They are also a great low impact way to improve your cardiovascular strength as well as flexibility and overall body strength.
