What is Cellulite?

Cellulite is a series of ripples of fat cells and subcutaneous connective tissue under the skin. Cellulite is usually found mostly in women on the thighs, back of the thighs and butt. It has a characteristic ‘orange peel’ appearance. If you rub your hand over it, you can feel the uneven, almost dimply appearance. It affects women but very few men.

We often get questions about what causes cellulite. A lot of experts believe the appearance of cellulite is created by a problem with circulation in the area where the fat cells are located. Others believe toxins in the system are responsible for cellulite and some other experts think hormones cause cellulite. So no definitive answers have been found yet as to the root cause of cellulite or how to reduce cellulite but there are many theories.

One common explanation of the cause of cellulite that also explains why very few men suffer from cellulite is the way a woman’s fat cells and connective tissue are held in place. A woman’s connective tissue is not flexible, meaning it doesn’t give too much, therefore as a woman gains weight and her fat cells get bigger, they tend to bulge and push upward toward the surface of the skin. The bigger her fat cells get, the more uneven the skin appears creating the orange peel affect which is commonly called cellulite. Men generally don’t have as much fat, especially in the thighs, back of the thighs and butt and their outer skin is much thicker and can hide some extra fat easier than a woman.

Do “skinny” people get the appearance of cellulite or do you have to be overweight? Yes, skinny people get cellulite because remember, it’s not about the size of the person, it’s about how many fat cells are all crammed in one area that cause cellulite.

Can I Reduce My Cellulite?

Yes, you can reduce your cellulite. I have seen cellulite reduction in many of our fitness clients. Once a client starts eating correctly with a proper hormonal balanced food plan, their body will naturally start using fat as energy and when they incorporate an exercise program with a combination of resistance and cardio together, the results are incredible. Cellulite can be reduced by following a proper food and exercise program because when your fat cells shrink they do not push or bulge upward toward the surface of your skin therefore, the appearance of cellulite greatly diminishes.
